Introduction to workplace organizing - the IWW approach
[This course is held in English. If you would prefer to take the course in Danish, you can instead sign up for the one we are holding on 1–2 November.]
Workplace organising is a cornerstone of unionism. It is the process through which workers collectively create change in their workplaces by identifying shared issues, building strong relationships, and taking action to improve their conditions.
Anyone can take part in organising – regardless of job role, seniority, or whether you are new at the workplace. Because organising focuses on relationships, you also don’t need to be an elected representative or covered by a collective agreement to get involved.
The IWW approach
In this two-day training, you will be introduced to the IWW’s approach to workplace organising, grounded in grassroots direct action. While PROSA organises IT professionals, the IWW focuses on solidarity across all groups of workers – an approach known as “industrial unionism”.
Expected outcome
The course provides you with tools, tactics, and strategies for building solidarity with your co-workers and for creating real change in your workplace.
Teaching method
You will practice the IWW techniques by applying them to your workplace and to workplaces of other participants. This means group discussion or roleplay, depending on the technique; there is not much lecture.
At the end of the course you will prepare a plan for how to keep practicing and start applying the relevant techniques in your workplace.
Target audience
The course is relevant for all workers - including employees, independent consultants, unemployed people, and students. The focus is on workplaces – both traditional and non-traditional – but the same tools can also be applied in your apartment building, your job centre, or your school.
Meals
We will serve breakfast and lunch on both days. If you have dietary restrictions, please note them in the comment field.
Travel expenses
If you are a PROSA member and do not live nearby, PROSA can cover your travel expenses. Reimbursement is based on the cheapest form of public transport. Please note this in the comment field if you would like PROSA to pay for your travel.
Trainer
The course is facilitated by a trainer from the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). More information and resources at https://www.iww.org/
