LaTeX for Intermediate Users

Already created your first LaTeX documents – and want to take it further? Then join us for the second of our two LaTeX courses. This course is for those who already know the basics of LaTeX. We’ll dive into topics like TikZ for figures and writing your own macros. We’ll also look at automated generation of document components.

This is particularly relevant if you want to define LaTeX templates that can be filled with data from, for example, an Excel file – or if you have lots of experimental data that needs to be included in a report.

Hands-on examples will be based on a structured presentation. We’ll provide links to real documents so you can see how advanced LaTeX features are applied in practice. And you’ll get exercises that give you hands-on experience with these elements.

• Creating custom macros to reuse code
• Drawing with TikZ: starting with the basic principles, then working with symbolic placement and styling, and finally exploring how to scale this up to larger figures
• Automating and structuring documents

Target Group

Intermediate users who have already written LaTeX documents and want to learn best practices, automation, and advanced features.

The courses are offered as two independent yet connected sessions:

• Course 1: Introduction to LaTeX – For complete beginners
• Course 2: Intermediate LaTeX – For those who want to move forward and work efficiently with their workflow

You can attend one or both, depending on your level and needs. If you’re completely new, the first course will qualify you for the second. For the latter, it’s an advantage if you have some programming experience.

About the Instructor

Aslak Johansen works at SDU’s Software Engineering Section and teaches object-oriented programming and Internet of Things. He has a background in computer science and research in everything from information models to distributed systems. And he has been using LaTeX for more than 25 years.

This course will be in English, but the instructor also speaks Danish.
